Weight loss is all about DIET. Sure, exercise helps too, but honestly, you MUST get your diet under control if you want to see results.
It can be hard to start eating healthy—I totally get it! I USED to be a root beer loving, fast food eating, sugarholic. It’s true! I did NOT grow up eating healthy. It wasn’t until my volleyball coach in high school got on me about my poor eating habits that I started to take an interest in nutrition.
I had SO many questions. Is ham healthy? Eggs are bad, right? What about bread? Oh M GEEEE it was enough to make my head spin!
After YEARS of studying nutrition, it’s second nature to me now! I’ll tell you something: it DOES get easier. I promise. Soon eating healthy will be second nature to you!
OK, so how can you start eating healthier when you have no clue how to get started?
Here are some tips for you:
Tip 1: Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full. Seems natural, right? It is how we SHOULD eat…but so many of us eat out of habit, boredom, social situations, stress, sadness, etc., that we lose touch with our true hunger. Take the time to listen! Before you grab for a snack, ask yourself if you are truly hungry or are you just bored?
Tip 2: Eat food as closely as possible to its natural state. Think meat, veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds. If it is a food that your great grandparents ate growing up, then eat it! If it’s manufactured in a plant and comes in a package, eat sparingly.
Tip 3: Nothing is really off limits. I mean that! The ONLY thing I say you should avoid is soda. Other than that, enjoy your favorite treats in moderation! Yes, I eat bacon and brownies and bread. Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to cut out everything!
Think you can start with those tips? I know you can! Here’s the thing: don’t think you need to implement all of these tips at once. That can be overwhelming!!! Implement tip 1 today. Start really paying attention to your hunger cues. Is your belly grumbling? Rate your hunger on a scale of 1-10 before you chow down.
Once you have moderation under control, start eating more veggies! Try to include a fruit or veggie and a protein at every meal. Think eggs with some watermelon for breakfast, chicken salad (watch out for the dressing…make your own!) with avocado for lunch, and a grilled salmon with roasted veggies and a sweet potato for dinner. Not so hard, right?
When eating foods in their most natural state feels easy, then focus on tip 3! Start enjoying food in moderation. Instead of eating 3 brownies, try having just 1…once or twice a week =)
I hope these tips can help you start eating healthier! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions…I’m here for you!
