I like to say that you can eat anything that you want in moderation…and that it can be a part of a healthy ‘diet’. However, there are some foods that I think are an exception to that rule…there are foods that are SO bad for you that I don’t think you should EVER eat them. Here are 5 Foods You Should NEVER Eat.

1. Artificial Sweeteners

This includes diet soda. Anything that is sugar free, or packets of sweetener. Why should they be avoided? Well, for one, sweeteners are WAY sweeter than sugar, and they can reset your taste buds to crave sugary foods….resulting in YOU eating more junk.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients in Diet Coke: Carbonated water, caramel color, aspartame, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate (preserves freshness), natural flavors, citric acid, caffeine.

Over the last few years, researchers have linked diet soft drinks to everything from obesity to sugar cravings to depression. But a recent study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine suggests that routinely drinking these artificially sweetened soft drinks may do even more serious damage. They could increase your risk heart attack or stroke!

In the report, scientists followed more than 2,500 people over the age of 40 for 10 years and monitored their drinking of diet soda. After accounting for other risk factors, like body mass index, high blood pressure and diabetes, researchers noticed that those who drank diet soft drinks on a daily basis were 43 percent more likely to suffer a vascular event, including heart attack and stroke, than people who drank none.

Need something to help you break your addiction? Try green tea, sparkling water, iced coffee, or add pieces of frozen fruit to water for some flavor.

2. Margarine

Many people think that margarine can be a healthy alternative to butter….BUT it’s loaded with trans fats (BAD!), which increases cholesterol. It also has WAY more ingredients than butter…which has just one or two. Stick with the more natural of the two, in moderation.

3. Frozen Meals

Yes, they may be convenient…but they are also heavily processed with WAY too many ingredients that you can’t pronounce, as well as your daily dose of sodium. Instead of relying on frozen meals when you’re busy, cook more at one time and freeze for leftovers.

Check out this example of Shrimp and Angel Hair Pasta’s ingredients…yowza!
Ingredients: BLANCHED MACARONI PRODUCT (WATER, SEMOLINA, WHEAT GLUTEN), SKIM MILK, SHRIMP (WATER, SALT, SODIUM PHOSPHATES), WATER, RED PEPPERS, CARROTS, SHERRY WINE, 2% OR LESS OF SOYBEAN OIL, MODIFIED CORNSTARCH, BLEACHED WHEAT FLOUR, GARLIC PUREE, SALT, PARMESAN CHEESE (CULTURED MILK, SALT, ENZYMES), ROASTED RED PEPPER PUREE, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, SHRIMP FLAVOR (MALTODEXTRIN, SALT, SCALLOP EXTRACT, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, CORNSTARCH, SHRIMP EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVOR, SOY LECITHIN), CULTURED WHEY, BUTTERFAT, SPICES, LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE, ASIAGO CHEESE (CULTURED MILK, SALT, ENZYMES), FLAVOR (MALTODEXTRIN, FLAVORING AND MODIFIED FOOD STARCH), YEAST EXTRACT, ENZYME MODIFIED PARMESAN CHEESE (CULTURED MILK, WATER, SALT, ENZYMES), XANTHAN GUM, WHEY, ANNATTO COLOR.

4. Lunch Meats

Ingredient label for deli roast beefBeef, water, contains less than 2 percent of sodium lactate, slat, sodium phosphates, sodium diacetate, flavor, sodium ascorbate, sodium nitrite, caramel color.

Holy cow…eating processed deli meat on a daily basis can elevate your risk of developing colorectal cancer by 36 percent, according to a 2011 study from the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Scientists aren’t certain if it’s the nitrites, nitrates or other additives in these meats that confer the risk. They just point out that there is no amount of processed meat — including those preserved by smoking, salting or curing — that isn’t associated with a higher incidence of cancer.

What SHOULD you eat on a sandwich? I like to load my up with hummus and veggies! For you meat eaters try grilled chicken breast, roasted turkey breast, or tuna!

5. Milk With rBGH

rBGH stands for recombinant bovine growth hormone, and it’s given to dairy cows to boost their milk production. It’s been shown to increase udder infections and even lead to pus in the milk! ICK! It also increases a hormone called insulin-like growth factor, which is thought to be linked to an increased risk for breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and early puberty.

What should you have instead??  Look for milk that says rBGH-free or rBST-free, or buy organic milk. You can also make the switch to a non dairy milk like almond or coconut. I’m a big fan of almond milk!!
