I’ve gotten this question quite a bit—should you buy a dvd program so you can workout at home or should you join a gym?
Every person is different—so this is going to be a personal decision. BUT there are some pros and cons to having a gym membership.
Pro: You get to see other grown ups. This is a big pro if you’re a stay at home mama—sometimes it’s just great to get out of the house!
Pro: You might be inspired to workout harder being around others
Pro: If you take classes you’ll have extra accountability
Con: You have to worry about child care. This is a BIG con for me! Now that my mother in law is here it’s easier, but before that I felt like I was just wasting money on a gym membership.
Con: Expensive!!! I like buying workout dvds—like Brazil But Lift is less than $60. You have it FOREVER so you don’t have to pay that again! My gym membership costs $39/month—so in less than two months I’ve already saved money by buying a home workout program.
Con: You have to leave your house. Ok this may be a pro for some—but for me it’s a con!! My gym is 15 minutes away!! By the time I drive there and back I could’ve already gotten a workout in at home!
Con: Contracts!!!! I signed up for a gym when we were living in St. Louis and we moved before the contract was up—and we weren’t able to cancel it—so we ended up paying for a gym membership that we couldn’t even use!
Obviously, this is going to be a decision that only you can make—you know yourself. Do you have someone who can watch your kids so you can drive to the gym or is it easier to workout at home? You’re going to want to do whatever is easiest for you—if it’s not convenient, you’re probably not going to stick with it!
Tell me: are you a gym person or do you prefer to workout at home?
