Have you ever seen the movie Invictus about Nelson Mandela? I went to Dani Johnson’s Creating a Dynasty seminar and one of the nights was spent watching this movie and analyzing the characteristics that Nelson Mandela has as a leader.
As my team with Beachbody grows, I aim to embody more of these characteristics myself! I am most definitely a work in progress, but I think we can all learn something from the great Nelson Mandela.
In no particular order, here are some of the leadership traits that Nelson Mandela shows:
- High level of people skills
- No jealousy, accepts criticism, throws away the turd (inside joke from the seminar ;))
- Greets everyone in the office with good morning. Asks how their families are..gives encouragement
- He accepts everyone…the past is in the past…we look to the future now.
- He didn’t just ignore the gossip…he confronted it head on
- Jealousy and gossip limits earning potential
- We have a team and we are all equal…there is no boss.
- Never make yourself the issue…make the vision the issue
- Forgiveness liberates the soul
- Your character determines the size of your bank account
- He smiled and honored, refused to take offense when the crowd was booing. Must have offensive mindset and kill with kindness when people slander you. He leads by example.
- He studied the enemy…need to study people!
- He said: “I believe you made this vote with insufficient information”…did not put them down
- He looks at his country as his family…I should look at my business as my family
- When a ‘nobody’ came to visit him, he aid: “It’s an honor to meet you. Thank you for coming all this way. I am so excited to meet you.”
- In order to build our nation, we must all exceed our own expectations
- Edification, honor, making someone feel special and important, no one is invisible
- You criticize without understanding. That is selfish thinking and does not serve a nation.
- If you don’t care who gets the credit you will be unusually successful
- Most don’t rise up in leadership because they care about who gets the credit
- We must build purpose as a team. Need to do missions trips!, must add a purpose to what we are doing that is bigger than the work…must be a vision for something bigger.
- If I cannot change when circumstances demand it, how can I expect others to?
- He memorized everyones names and shook each of their hands
