I got a LOT of emails and messages about this one. How can I stop binge eating?
Typically, I ask the person how many calories they are eating throughout the day–and 99% of the time it is NOT ENOUGH! If you starve yourself all day long, of course you’re going to be super hungry at night and eat any and everything that crosses your path.
You MUST eat to lose weight. Super low calorie diets do NOT work in the long run!
4 Tips to STOP Binge Eating:
1. Eat a breakfast with a protein and fat. I recommend oatmeal with almond butter and a piece of fruit, or two scrambled eggs with 2 pieces of whole grain toast and a piece of fruit. Something that will fill you up–NOT cereal. And NOT just coffee. Eat breakfast!
2. Keep snacks on you at ALL TIMES! My purse is always full of almonds and protein bars–because I know that there will be times that I get busy or I don’t have the time to stop and eat something. Be prepared!
3. Eat every 3-4 hours. I’m not saying eat if you’re not hungry–I want you to listen to your body–but typically 3-4 hours is enough time for your food to digest and for you to be ready to eat again–if you’re eating a smaller portioned meal. For someone on a 1500 calorie/day diet–it may be five meals of 300 calories at each meal.
4. Know your pattern. Awareness of the problem will help you break the problem. If you go for a bag of chips or cookies at 9 pm, first, STOP BUYING THE JUNK FOOD! Second, plan something else around that time. Take your family on a walk so you don’t think about food. If you’ve eaten enough throughout the day like I discussed above–you really shouldn’t need to eat again at night.
You CAN stop binge eating. You must believe you will do it! You are stronger than you think!
